Abstract

This inaugural editorial introduces the Journal of African Business & Economics Management (JABEM): why it exists, what it publishes, and the standards of peer review, openness and integrity it holds itself to. It invites researchers, practitioners and students to submit work on the business and economic questions that matter most for Africa.

It is a pleasure to welcome you to the Journal of African Business & Economics Management (JABEM).

Why a new journal

Africa's economies are changing quickly. Mobile money has changed how millions of people save, pay and borrow. Small and informal enterprises employ most of the workforce. Agriculture remains the livelihood of a large share of the population, while new regional markets are forming under the African Continental Free Trade Area. Yet much of the research that shapes business teaching, management practice and economic policy on the continent is still produced and published far from the firms, farms and markets it describes.

JABEM exists to help close that gap: to give researchers working on African questions, with African data, a rigorous and accessible home for their work, and to make that work freely available to the students, managers and policymakers who can use it.

What we publish

We welcome research articles, reviews, case studies and short communications across business, economics and management. We especially invite work on four themes: fintech and mobile money; small enterprises and entrepreneurship; agribusiness and value chains; and trade, policy and public finance. We value careful methods, honest reporting of results, including null results, and clear implications for practice and policy. Our full scope is set out in the Aims and Scope.

Our commitments

Rigour. Every research manuscript is assessed through double-anonymous peer review by at least two independent reviewers. Editors decide on the strength of the work alone.

Openness. Every article is free to read from the day it is published, under a CC BY 4.0 licence, and authors keep their copyright.

Integrity. We follow the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics. Fees never influence editorial decisions, and we correct the record openly when errors are found.

Speed and transparency. JABEM publishes continuously, so accepted articles appear as soon as they are ready, and authors can follow their manuscript through every stage online.

An invitation

A journal is only as good as the community around it. I invite researchers, doctoral students and practitioners to send us their best work, and scholars with relevant expertise to join our pool of reviewers. Together, we can build a journal that reflects the depth and diversity of business and economic life in Africa.

I look forward to reading your work.
