Fees and Waivers
What it costs to publish in JABEM, and how waivers work.
Reading JABEM is free for everyone. To cover peer review management, editing, typesetting, hosting and long-term access, the journal charges an article processing charge (APC).
Article processing charge
- Amount: KES 15,000 per manuscript.
- When: payable on submission.
- How: by M-PESA from the author portal, or by bank transfer on request.
Payment never influences editorial decisions. Editors handling a manuscript decide on its merit alone, and paying the APC does not guarantee acceptance.
Refunds
If a manuscript is declined at screening, before it is sent to peer review, the APC is refunded in full. Once peer review has begun, the APC covers the cost of review and is not refunded, whatever the decision. Withdrawn manuscripts are refunded only if withdrawn before review begins.
Waivers and discounts
We do not want fees to stop good research being published. Full or partial waivers are available, for example for students and for authors from low-income countries or without funding. Ask for a waiver before paying by writing to editor@jabem.org with your manuscript reference and a short explanation. Waiver requests are handled separately from editorial decisions.
No other charges
There are no submission, page, colour or reading charges.
